What are Sectoral/Thematic Mutual Funds?

Sectoral and thematic funds concentrate on a single sector — IT, banking, pharma, infrastructure — or a theme that cuts across sectors, like ESG or consumption. This is a deliberate departure from the diversification that governs every other equity category: where a diversified fund is generally capped around 10% exposure to any single sector, a sectoral fund can be 90%+ concentrated in exactly one, by design.

That concentration is the whole point and the whole risk. When a sector is in favor — IT during a rupee depreciation and global tech upcycle, banking during a credit growth phase — a well-timed sectoral fund can outperform every diversified category by a wide margin. When that sector turns, there's no diversification elsewhere in the portfolio to cushion the fall, and sector cycles in India have historically run for years at a time in both directions.

Because of this, sectoral and thematic funds are almost universally recommended as a small satellite position — often capped at 5-10% of total equity allocation — layered on top of a diversified core, reserved for investors who have a specific, informed view on that sector's cycle rather than as a way to build broad equity exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Sectoral/Thematic mutual funds?

Sectoral/Thematic mutual funds invest in specific sectors like IT, Banking, Pharma — high conviction bets with concentrated risk.

What is the minimum investment in Sectoral/Thematic funds?

Most Sectoral/Thematic funds allow SIP starting from ₹500/month or ₹1,000 lumpsum. Some funds have lower minimums of ₹100 via SIP.

Are Sectoral/Thematic mutual funds safe?

Equity mutual funds carry market risk — your investment value can go up or down with the market. They are suitable for long-term goals (5+ years) where temporary volatility is acceptable.

How are Sectoral/Thematic fund returns taxed?

Gains held for more than 1 year are Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) — ₹1L exempt, 10% above that. Short-term gains (held < 1 year) are taxed at 15% (STCG).

Can I use a sectoral fund as my main equity investment?

It's not recommended — sectoral funds lack the diversification that protects diversified equity funds from a single sector's downturn. Most financial planners suggest capping sectoral/thematic exposure at 5-10% of total equity holdings, layered on top of a diversified core like large cap or flexi cap.

How long do sector cycles typically last in India?

Sector cycles have historically run for multiple years in both directions rather than months — IT's post-2020 rupee-driven rally and banking's multi-year credit growth phases are examples. That length is exactly why timing a sectoral fund entry and exit well is difficult, and why concentration risk is treated so seriously in this category.
