What are Flexi Cap Mutual Funds?
Flexi cap is a relatively new SEBI category, created in November 2020 specifically to give fund managers unrestricted freedom to allocate across large, mid, and small cap stocks based on where they see the best opportunities — no minimum allocation to any market-cap segment is mandated. It was carved out after SEBI simultaneously tightened the rules for the older "multi cap" category, which now requires a minimum 25% in each of large, mid, and small cap.
That distinction matters in practice: a flexi cap fund can go 90% large cap in an expensive, volatile market and rotate toward mid/small cap when valuations look more attractive elsewhere — a multi cap fund cannot, by rule, drop below 25% in any segment regardless of market conditions. Flexi cap effectively delegates the large/mid/small allocation decision to the fund manager entirely, which is either its biggest strength (if the manager calls it right) or its biggest risk (if they don't).
This makes fund selection more important in flexi cap than in a rules-constrained category like large cap or multi cap — since two flexi cap funds can look completely different underneath a similar name, it's worth checking a fund's actual market-cap split (usually disclosed monthly in its factsheet) rather than assuming it behaves like a large cap fund by default.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Flexi Cap mutual funds?
Flexi Cap mutual funds invest across market caps with no restriction — fund manager decides allocation dynamically.
What is the minimum investment in Flexi Cap funds?
Most Flexi Cap funds allow SIP starting from ₹500/month or ₹1,000 lumpsum. Some funds have lower minimums of ₹100 via SIP.
Are Flexi Cap mutual funds safe?
Equity mutual funds carry market risk — your investment value can go up or down with the market. They are suitable for long-term goals (5+ years) where temporary volatility is acceptable.
How are Flexi Cap fund returns taxed?
Gains held for more than 1 year are Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) — ₹1L exempt, 10% above that. Short-term gains (held < 1 year) are taxed at 15% (STCG).
What's the difference between flexi cap and multi cap funds?
Multi cap funds are required to hold a minimum 25% each in large, mid, and small cap stocks at all times. Flexi cap funds have no such minimum — the fund manager can allocate however they see fit across market caps, including concentrating heavily in just one segment if that's their read on the market.
Is flexi cap a good default choice for a first equity mutual fund?
It's a commonly recommended starting point precisely because it doesn't force you to separately decide your large/mid/small cap split — the fund manager handles that allocation. The tradeoff is that you're placing more trust in that specific manager's market-cap calls than you would with a category that has fixed allocation rules.
