How the GST Calculator India Works
You enter a price and a GST rate, and the calculator either adds GST on top of a base price (exclusive pricing) or extracts the embedded GST from a total price (inclusive pricing) — both directions, using India's standard GST formula.
Example Scenarios
| Scenario | Result |
|---|---|
| ₹1,000 base price at 18% GST | GST ₹180 · Total ₹1,180 |
| ₹5,000 base price at 12% GST | GST ₹600 · Total ₹5,600 |
| ₹2,000 base price at 28% GST | GST ₹560 · Total ₹2,560 |

Frequently Asked Questions
GST amount = Base Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100). To find the total price including GST, add this GST amount to the base price. To extract GST from an inclusive price, use Base Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate/100).
India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods), 12% and 18% (standard goods/services — most items fall under 18%), and 28% (luxury and sin goods). Some items like unbranded food grains are exempt (0%).
For sales within a state, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state sales, IGST (Integrated GST) is charged at the full combined rate and later apportioned between the centre and destination state.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying the wrong GST slab — always confirm whether an item falls under 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%.
- Confusing an inclusive price (GST already added) with an exclusive price when calculating the base amount.
- Forgetting that CGST+SGST (intra-state) and IGST (inter-state) apply differently depending on the transaction.
